A merger of Apple TV+ and Paramount+ into a unified subscription plan

Rumors suggest that Apple and Paramount are exploring the idea of melding Apple TV+ and Paramount+ into a single subscription service. This potential collaboration could be advantageous for individuals who have an interest in or are already subscribed to both platforms.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal (article behind a paywall), the two corporations are engaged in preliminary discussions to offer their streaming services at a more cost-effective rate. The specifics of this prospective package remain murky for now.

The scope of this partnership is uncertain with regards to its global availability, as Paramount’s existing alliances worldwide could influence this decision. Partnerships between streaming services are quite common. For instance, Paramount+ is integrated into JioCinema Premium in India, and in the U.S., Verizon provides bundles that include Netflix and HBO’s Max. Moreover, Disney+ offers a package that incorporates Hulu and ESPN+ in addition to its own platform.

Why are such collaborations gaining prevalence? Reportedly, both Apple TV+ and Paramount witnessed a 7% decline in subscribers in October, the largest attrition rate in the industry. Meanwhile, the overall expense of streaming services has been ascending steadily, with some services raising their fees by as much as 25% over the recent years. This surge in costs has rendered it challenging for consumers to afford multiple subscriptions, compelling them to seek more economical alternatives. For example, Apple TV+ recently elevated its monthly charge from $6.99 to $9.99 following a $3 increase in October.

If negotiations between Apple and Paramount prove fruitful, a unified subscription could provide enhanced value for users. Paramount+ boasts popular series like Star Trek and Yellowstone, in addition to live sports, while Apple TV+ offers a diverse library encompassing Ted Lasso and Severance, alongside live sporting events. In terms of pricing, a potential combo deal involving Apple TV+ and Paramount+ Essential at $12 per month could be more appealing than individually purchasing both subscriptions at $16 per month ($192 annually), potentially saving consumers nearly $50 per year ($144).

It is important to acknowledge that escalating subscription costs have rendered standalone streaming services less accessible for many, prompting a demand for more budget-friendly options. Through the potential amalgamation of services, users may find respite from the challenges of managing and paying for multiple solitary subscriptions.
