Apple Aims To Challenge €1.8 Billion Penalty For Music In Europe

Europe’s EU regulators have levied a €1.8 billion penalty on Apple for purportedly exploiting its leading position in music streaming applications. Apple has disclosed its intention to contest the decision in Europe.

Apple has alleged that Spotify, which holds a 56 percent stake in the European Music sector and does not remunerate Apple for utilizing its App Store, is the driving force behind the verdict and the entity that instigated the initial grievance against Apple with the European regulatory authority.

Presently, Spotify dominates 56 percent of Europe’s music streaming industry, surpassing its closest rival’s market share by twofold, and contributes nothing to Apple for the tools and services that have contributed significantly to their global branding success. The App Store, in addition to the suite of tools and technologies Spotify employs to develop, enhance, and distribute its app to Apple patrons worldwide, has played a significant role in their achievements.

Apple has communicated its intent to challenge the decision by the European Commission.
