Enhanced Search Functionality and Improved History in Newly Released KeePass 2.56

The developer behind the free password manager KeePass has introduced version 2.56 of the Windows software. By default, KeePass functions as a local password protector, working independently without depending on cloud accounts or connections. Users have the choice to utilize synchronization features, but it is not mandatory.

The launch closely follows the release of KeePass 1.42.
KeePass 2.56 is accessible in both a portable variant and an installer. Users may come across a SmartScreen warning in Windows, but it can be dismissed as a false alert.

New Features in KeePass

One key addition in version 2.56 is the implementation of a search tool within the program’s settings. A new search bar now resides at the bottom of the options panel, enabling users to locate relevant entries within the settings.
The search tool automatically highlights the first related entry as you type, and pressing Enter allows for easy navigation between corresponding items. While the search tool does not display the number of matching entries, this is not a major issue due to the relatively limited number of options in KeePass.
Another notable enhancement improves the History feature of the password manager. Detailed information about changes to an entry, such as password modifications, now appear in the history tab. Additionally, a new comparison feature facilitates side-by-side examination of data.
To compare two entries, users can select both by holding the Ctrl key and choosing them. The compare button becomes active once two entries are selected. The history panel also includes a new “more” button with options to select all historical entries or delete all past entries while preserving current and unsaved data sets.
Other minor improvements in the latest version include reinforced process memory protection and enhancements to “specific report dialogs,” as stated in the official release notes.
